About
Dr. Richard Louis Miller
Clinical psychologist, author, and broadcaster with over 65 years of clinical experience in mind-body health. At 87, he continues to practice, teach, and share the tools that have helped thousands of people master anxiety, overthinking, and negative self-talk.
He founded the Cokenders Alcohol and Drug Program — detoxifying over 1,500 people without medication — and created the Health Sanctuary at Wilbur Hot Springs, which he directed for 48 years. His work has appeared in national media including Time, Newsweek, NBC News, and CBS News, and he has served as consultant to the President’s Commission on Mental Health and the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Good health is worth fighting for — and it’s essential for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
Why I Do This
Nobody ever taught me how to control my mind. Not in 11 years of college. Not in any psychology program. I had to figure it out on my own — through decades of clinical practice, through surviving a Winnebago crushing both my legs, through facing cancer and heart disease.
Now, at 87, I’m giving away everything I’ve learned. No fee, no charge, no box tops. The tools are simple. They work. And they can be learned by anyone — at home, at work, in the car, in the boardroom.
Your mind is a tool, not your boss. You are the boss.
A Life in Practice
Career begins at 21
Started clinical work at Laconia State School in New Hampshire. Witnessing institutional abuses shaped a lifelong mission to develop humane, practical tools for mental health.
Wilbur Hot Springs founded
Created the Health Sanctuary at Wilbur Hot Springs in Northern California — a healing retreat he owned and directed for 48 years.
Cokenders Program
Founded the internationally acclaimed Cokenders Alcohol and Drug Program, detoxifying over 1,500 individuals without medication — achieving an unprecedented 86% two-year success rate.
The Winnebago accident
A Winnebago ran over his motorcycle on the Pacific Coast Highway, crushing both legs. Doctors predicted amputation. He used conscious breathing to survive, fought for surgery instead, and completed two triathlons within two years.

Seven books published
Authored works spanning psychedelic medicine, clinical psychology, and practical tools for mastering the mind — including Master Your Mind, his first book for a general audience.
